Bio

Being surrounded by musicians his whole life, Austin has developed a deep and versatile musical background. Starting on saxophone at age 11, he was immersed in the concert band tradition early on, building a strong foundation in classical technique and musicianship. However, it wasn’t until 8th grade that he picked up the electric bass and began to seriously pursue music. With a rock bassist for a father, Austin learned by playing along to bands like Yes, Rush, and The Beatles, shaping his ear and groove from an early age.

Drawing from his classical roots, he continued to expand his skills by performing in jazz band throughout high school, where he discovered a passion for improvisation and ensemble playing. This passion led him to attend the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he currently studies jazz bass under Aaron Jacobs, further refining his technique and musical voice.

While jazz remains his primary focus academically, Austin’s main professional work is alongside his brother, Jack Kays, a singer-songwriter with whom he has toured extensively around the world. Performing original music on international stages has given Austin invaluable experience and a dynamic presence as a live performer.

In addition to touring, Austin stays active in the Cincinnati music scene, performing a wide range of gigs, from intimate jazz combos to worship services at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. His ability to move seamlessly between genres and settings makes him a highly adaptable and in-demand musician.

With a strong foundation in multiple styles and a passion for live performance, Austin continues to grow as both a performer and collaborator, bringing energy, professionalism, and musicality to every performance he's a part of.
